The 3M adhesive is probably already on your car. Look at the lip just ahead of the rear wheel wells. See the clear film? No water can get under there if it is properly applied. I have seen several Volvos with the 3M film on the front here in Washington, and it appears to hold up very nicely, even in our wet climate.

I agree with your decision not to use a bra. I had one on a BMW and ended up with a line of abrasion across the hood where the edge of the bra had trapped fine grit.
