Request for Diagnosis-- Steering Column Flutter and More 850 '96

About 9 months ago I noticed a change in the way bumps, particularly those in quick successsion were being communicated thru the steering column. I've been feeling a metal on metal knock through the column in situations where I go over rough patches of road (in Washington DC -- that means nearly all the time). At my 35K service I asked the dealer to look into it-- they said all the steering and front end linkages were fine. Well, now I'm up to a 40K service and the problem is still there. Moreover, I experience an intermittent steering wheel flutter during highway driving. I had the tires rebalanced, but no joy. At times it almost feels as if the drive shaft is out of balance or alignment. I'm thinking that these two phenomenon are linked -- the metal on metal feel in the steering column and the intermitten hi-speed flutter. Any suggestions fellow bricksters?
