diagnostic unit 850 95

I tried to read my diagnostic unit tonight using the haynes manual as a guide. I can't seem to get it to work. I put the test plug into port 6 on the A unit, turn on the ignition and as soon as I push the button the LED lights up and goes out when I release it. Am I doing something wrong?

Can someone tell me how to use this thing?
