I got this from Simon on the UK Volvo forum.

The pump has two outlets (on opposite sides for front and rear washers) and each pipe has a one-way valve. Depending which polarity is applied to the motor, the impeller will rotate clockwise or counter-clockwise which will force water thru one outlet or the other. The one-way valve prevents fluid being drawn back in thru the opposite outlet.
