Car is stuttering or hiccuping XC90 2004

Our XC90 seems to be stuttering at speeds above about 50 mph and when it is "working harder," for example on a slight upgrade. If I floor the accelerator, the transmission kicks down as normal and the car speeds up as normal. It is more during gentle acceleration. I tried higher-octane gas, but that didn't help. Temperatures are very low right now (between 15 above and about 10 below zero F. Any thoughts?
