Brake Sponginess 850 1997

Hello, I'm in the process of getting my 97 855R together (I just got it used from a private seller). Right now the most distressing problem is the brakes:

The brake pedal is very "soft". When I step on it, I feel the brakes grab a little bit very briefly, then they release and the pedal goes halfway down to the floor with pretty much no resistance. At that point, they grab and hold.

Sometimes when I'm sitting at a light idling, I hear the engine go into low idle speed and the pedal simultaneously sinks down a little more from where I'm holding it with my foot. Also, if I step on and release the brakes a couple of times, the pedal firms up a lot.

How weird or bad is this? What should I do?

Thanks!
