Hand brake "broken' 850

The "I could feel at least one piece of broken metal in there" sounds like it might be more than the cable.

But I agree, if replacing the cable, rather than the handbrake mechanism, I'd buy a new one. And the only way to be certain what's broken is to take the console apart and look inside.

I've had more problems with my car's parking brake over the years than I can count. The cable did rust and freeze at one time.

Since my car is a manual, I actually need it. I even have a block of wood in the garage that's painted orange and dedicated to chocking the Volvo's wheel whenever the parking brake goes on strike.
