30K service problem - bad plug/new catalytic converter! S80 2000

I just had my 30K mile service. I started to drive home and started to lose power, my check engine light starts flashing, goes off, starts flashiing again. Back at the dealership a couple of day later they tell me it was a bad spark plug that caused a too much fuel to be released into the catalytic converter and blew it out. They had to put in a new set of plugs, replace the mass air flow sensor and replace the converter. Anyone ever hear of this before? Isn't there such a thing as being able to test spark plugs. This is pretty scary that a bad plug can cause all this. Are they telling me a tall tail to cover their you know whats?
