Reset timing at crank - but crank locked

I'd say that project has eaten your lunch.

Refresh my memory.....
Did you have the cam pulleys off of the cam shafts?
If so, did you align the slots on the back ends of the cams in order to get them indexed properly prior to bolting the sprockets back on?
If so, were both slots horizontal?
If so, did you realize that the slot on the intake cam should be ABOVE center and the slot on the exhaust cam should be BELOW center? (The slots are slightly off center.)

The slots should both be horizontal, but not on the same plane. So even if you have the intake slot above center and the exhaust slot below center, you don't want to simply run a straight bar through both slots. If you do, both cams will end up SLIGHTLY retarded. A correct alignment tool will have an offset built into it that takes into account that one slot is above center and the other slot is below center.
