Like you, I don't race my car or run around a skidpad. I put Michelin MXV4 Plus on my '97 last fall, whatever the recommended size is. I love 'em. A lot quieter and smoother riding than what I had (Continental P-7000's or something like that). It is like a new car, really a night and day experience. FWIW I run them at the recommended 35PSI. Seem fine in the rain, I don't remember any snow this year (Tennessee).

Michelin gets dinged for being expensive. Maybe you can get a tire that is just as good for less, I don't know. It's not like you can try out a few sets and compare. I got mine at Sam's Club, paid right at $400 for the set, mounted, balanced, road hazard warranty and out the door.
