LOL, I would have bought them a car on Craigslist, let them drive it around for 5 weeks, and then sold it again! Yes, renting a car for a month is outrageous.

Putting camera gear in the back seat is an invitation for theft and will not make a difference in MPG. Most of the brand new cars will get 30+mpg on the highway. The air filter will already be clean. AND the price of regular will be the least of their expenses.
