Manual transmission swap and the MIL 850 1996

Hi folks

Can anyone tell me difinitively--I'd like to install an M56H manual in a n/a 1996 850 that was built with an automatic transmission. If I swap in the manual, what effect will it have on the Check Engine light? Some posters say that the auto transmission computer must be pulled, but with it in or out the main computer will throw a code (for lack of communication with the transmission, presumably). Others don't mention it. I live in NY state and can't have a check engine light illuminated, but I do want that manual!

All help would be appreciated!

Steve
