I paid someone to replace the fuel pump ($770, part was $380) which requires taking out the gas tank in this case because I currently don't have a space where I can do it. The new fuel pump helped a lot but what also helped a lot was replacing the ambient temperature sensor, something that the car has been asking for for months. I thought it did nothing but report the outside temp but it helps the engine adjust the throttle body. It's located in the passenger or driver's side mirror at the bottom. The wire runs into the door so you have to remove the door panel. I was tempted to go around this detail by just twisty-tying the wires of the new one to the old one but any change in impedance can mess up the part.Consider changing out the fuel pressure sensor on the rail at the same time as the pump
To remove the door panel and install the wires:
With a nail , or a pin punch, or a big paper clip, push in the center of the plastic rivets that hold the door panel to the door, remove four or five of them. You are pushing in a little pin that holds the rivets open
Then pry open the front of the handle that you grab to shut the door and remove the two T-25 screws in the deep holes
Pry the plastic cover out of the depression for your hand in the cushioned part of the door handle and take out that screw.
Lift the panel hard to get the neoprene window seal to let go of it. Watch out ! The speaker wire to the door tweeter is short.
The ambient temp sensor is connected to a green plug coming from the mirror . Snap open a little door at the top of the plug and push the two white wires out with a paper clip from the lower, female part of the plug . Make sure to put the new wires in the same two holes.
