The glovebox more likely got mangled by forcing it open due to a broken operating lever. This is a VERY common problem on 850s.

I used the hacksaw method to get mine open and initiate the repair. Did some damage to the vinyl, but fortunately it cannot be seen unless the glovebox door is open.
