Hi Rich,

You need to find the Volvo wiring diagram for your model year
start here

That will show the electrical wiring diagrams and the next page gives component locations and pictorals. It is essential for troubleshooting wiring.

The older RWD Volvo's had a single Bulb out sensor, but my 850 has a pair of bulb
out sensors. One of them in the trunk under the drivers side tail light module.
Maybe you're right and the three brake lights lose power at the sensor.

Happy troubleshooting, take consolation that your problem is much easier to solve
than some nasty intermittent problem.
