If you measure the battery and it's below 12.6VDC then the first thing you do
is look at the electrolyte level in each cell and make sure the plates are covered. Add distilled water (Not tap water) and put a trickle charge on the battery. You can get an inexpensive tester for the battery that will indicate the condition of each cell.

The alternator supplies about 14VDC in order to keep the battery charged.
You need a voltmeter to test this. It's important to have close to the 14V...
too low the battery wont get charged, and too high you start losing light
bulbs fast. The alternator should deliver a steady 14-14.1VDC at a low-medium idle.

Get a battery terminal brush and clean the battery terminals and the cable
ends, a little grease, (I like silicone grease) and re-tighten. (10MM)
