ECC - fan motor weirdness - affected by outside temperature? 850 1996

When the outside temperature, or temperature gauge on my 1996 850 ECC registers more than 80 degrees the fan motor will not turn UNLESS it is set on the defrost setting. Interestingly (at least to me), if outside temperature is below 80 (maybe 79) fan blows correctly both manually and on automatic setting at proper strength. I did have to recharge (two lbs freon) AC this year around early spring and for a short time the fan would squeak until I'd hit a bump, the squeaking would stop and the fan would blow at expected speed however it actually started squeaking last winter just sporadically so I don't think that issue had anything to do with AC recharge.

So before I start pulling more stuff (I already had a fan and cage to replace it when it goes completely) and buying stuff at the boneyard, your experiences and advice are appreciated.
