I don't write for Motor Trend, or any other publisher for that matter, but I think I know what they meant in stating their preference. The key word was 'stability'. They are referencing the efficacy of the newest systems which have all-speed traction control combined with yaw-control (and in some cases, Cadillac in particular, there is further integration). I've included a couple of URLs from winter reviews of Volvos DSTC system. If you read the effusive reviews I think you'll understand the differences in terms of real-world performance between AWD and DSTC.
