Spring clip fasteners are driving me nuts

I thought I would fix my EVAP code before it gets too cold. Sure enough, the small hose next to the fuel filter is dry rotted with a gaping hole. But, both ends of the old hose are held in place with those nasty small spring clips. You know, they have 1 tab on one side and 2 on the other. The theory is that you pull the single tab towards the double tab to release tension and slide the clip out of the way. Sure.

What I have is both tabs point to the top of the car, not where I can reach them. Of course, Murphy! I don't want to break anything, and these vacuum lines have been together for 25 years.

HOW do I get the old, cracked line off? I tried to surround the line with my pliers and squeeze the tabs, but then I can't move the clip.

Stupid spring clips!!

It is supposed to get cold tomorrow, help!
