Volvo had a service bulletin out on this noise from the door straps. The bolts that attach the strap to the door frame get loose and the strap makes a popping noise when the door is opened and closed. The hinges are not involved. Sounds like yours got loose, then eventually the bolts fell out, releasing the strap. The fix specified in the TSB is to use Lock-Tite on the bolt threads, and re-torque. You may need to buy new bolts if yours have fallen out. The attachment point is covered by a rubber boot that needs to be pulled back to see the bolts.
