sticky dashboard knobs

This is my first post on this section of the Brickboard. I've owned, driven, repaired, bought and sold many, many RWD Volvos. Now we have a 2002 S40 in the family. The history of this car is that it was owned by a "little old lady" who may have only driven it to church and the grocery store. It has a legitimate 25k miles and has been off the road for the past three years. Mechanically it drives, shifts and steers just fine. Aside from checking the condition of the timing belt, replacing the dry rotted tires and freeing up the brake pads in their brackets it only needed a cleaning.
The one "problem"---dashboard knobs that are sticky to the touch--eewww! Has anyone experienced this? -- any hope of cleaning them? -- and what did you use? Thanks in advance for any suggestions. -- Dave
