I happened to be looking at the manual regarding this very question today. Per the owner's manual (I read it cover to cover, it's chock full of good info) you do the 5 on/off cycle, then do the first remote within 30 seconds, then up to three (?) more within 10 seconds of each other. BTW, you can tell when the battery is going dead in the transmitter by three quick, quiet chirps from the remote when a button is pressed (vs. the normal 1 chirp). I verified this today also.
