Aftermath of heater core failure V70-XC70 1999

You need to remove the top carpet and rinse it with copious amounts of water. I did this on my 850:

Front carpets - Loosen the rear seat bolts. Remove the front seat bolts after sliding the seats to the rear. Remove the kick panels on both sides. Lift up the plastic rail to expose the edge of the carpet next to the door. Remove the foot rest, it pushes downward before you can lift it out (I used a light hammer to get it to start to move). Lift the front of the seat and unhook the carpet from the floor heater duct. Remove the carpet.

Rear carpets - this is a single piece. Unhook it first from under the rear seat, you will have to remove the seat cushions. Unbolt and remove the front seats, seatbelt holders.

Try not to bend the carpets too much or the fiberglass matting will crack.

I washed my front carpet in the bath tub, perfect pitch so that I could use simple green and a scrub brush to get the oil and tar stains out. Then I hung the carpet in the garage for a couple of very cold days until it dried.

The foam under the rubber is the real problem. I save newspaper for recycling, so I had a lot of it. I shoved copious amounts of newspaper under the foam and then pushed down on the rubber. BTW, forget removing the rubber, as it is a single piece installed at the factory before anything else was installed in the cabin! Once I was satisfied that the newspaper was no longer drawing moisture from the foam, I put the nice clean carpet back.

So long as the seats are secure, the car is drivable. I put a towel over the rubber mat just to keep scuff marks away. Amazing how much money is under the rear seat cushion and beside the front seats!!
