Negatory. The oil separator box is under the intake manifold. There is a lot of work involved in that cramped compartment.

I suspect that the code will come back in another 100 miles or so. Keep erasing it until spring....

Nothing to do with the gas cap. Your wife is in the clear, so long as she hears a click when tightening the cap.

It has everything to do with unmetered air entering the intake manifold. It could even be a dirty MAF.
