What websites should I use to purchase a used car from a private owner? 850 1996

You know the drill: No automatic Volvos from 2001-2003.

The 240 and 940 are RWD.

You didn't mention the price range. I am assuming less than $5K. The 240 cars are going back up in price, but no ABS until 1998(?) and only a driver airbag. Same with the 940, but they are still cheap.

Maintenance history!! Every seller claims they change the oil every 3K miles - that is pure BS. Look for some one who uses synthetic.

As for Asian, Honda, Toyota, and Mazda are all good. They tend to rust rear fenders, just in front of the wheels.

Craigslist is OK for really local cars. Autotrader requires ad money, so those cars are usually in better condition (garages).

Have fun! Looking is better than buying.
