A diff whine will change with speed and change sound when turning. A fuel pump noise is constant, but should be there even at idle. You have me stumped!

I would have asked the dealer to have a mechanic inspect it and see what he says. Better yet, have a non-dealer Volvo mechanic drive it. It might have been the angle gear, which never gets serviced correctly.
