car will not shut down properly S60

I`ve had a different "problem" with my 2012 XC60 which I`ve had for 6 months now.
Fairly often I`ve hit the "off" when parking but the engine keeps running. It seems very sensitive to hitting the EXACT place. The engine is very quiet so it`s quite easy to think the car is turned off. My daughter borrowed the car one day & found the car was still running after a two hr shopping trip at the mall. Fortunately, I had just filled the gas tank the day before!
Is there a point to being able to remove the fob & the car will still run? It has eluded me!
