I know this isn't fun, but you might want to spray the plug connectors with a cleaner and ensure that the male pins haven't retracted. Measuring the resistance between the 2 black wires should result in less than 2 Ohms but not zero. If it is greater than 2 Ohms, send it back and get a replacement.

There can be a lot of sand, grit on the connector that needs to be carefully cleaned off.
