Found Cloth in HVAC Plenum S80 2005

The HVAC blower was occasionally making a heck of a noise. I pulled the fan out and found a piece of cloth up in the plenum above the squirrel cage. It's about a foot long and looks kind of like some headliner material. Evidence showed it had been in contact with the fan. Does anyone recognize it as something that was supposed to be in there?

We've had the car since it was about three years old so I'm pretty sure the system has never been torn into besides (too infrequent) filter changes.
