Ahh, another tidbit of volvo info, thanks for that, it probably explains the code.
I found acid on the circuit board, tooth brushed it with water/baking soda, then dried it. Soldered new power wires to the underside of the board and used 2 NIMH phone batteries instead, mounted them remote from the box.
Reinstalled it all and the dash warning went away.
Then unplugged it and the warning came back, so it seems ok.

Probably won't last long term due to the acid damage on the board but I know how to get in there now.
