Hissing noise disappears when brake pedal is pushed in V70-XC70 2002

Dear BB forum:

I have owned a 2002 V70/2.4T wagon (~250K miles) for about 1.5 years now, and my wife claims there is a 'hissing' sound coming from under the driver's side of the dashboard, which disappears when the brake is applied. Since I am hard of hearing (especially at higher frequencies) I cannot hear it all. I have read that it could be the 'bellows over the booster' which is leaking. If this is correct, should we expect for it to get worse over time, and will it eventually affect braking performance? What are the best/worst case scenarios in terms of what this sound could be?

Thanks.

Bernie
