I must throw my 2 cents in.

Upon backing up I heard something resembling the plucking of a harp's longest string...only shortened in duration.
You could hear the resonance.

The lining was 65% off the 4 parking brake shoes. Nothing uniform. A postage stamp sized pierce affixed here and there.
There was more dust than I've ever seen before. I was lucky in that the friction material was ground away and did not jam between moving and stationary parts.

I hope the OP has inspected BOTH SIDES. No other thing to do.
