Generator warning light on dash is intermittent. 850 1996

In my '96 850 T my "generator warning light" ... that's what they call it in the manual... comes on intermittently. Usually when cold starting and sometimes while accelerating.. just for a couple seconds. I have just replaced the battery but this was occurring prior to that. Last year I did the complete timing belt assembly including serpentine and tensioner, pump etc. I suppose that it's possible that I put in a bad tensioner and the belt is flopping a bit but for it to appear 6 or 8 months later and only intermittently is suspect. I will check for codes but was wondering if anyone has had this issue...
Is alternator a suspect and can I test this with meter? Any DIY referral ?
Thanks for any ideas.
