Question about shocks and struts and age

My 1995 has no maintenance history. The ride is rough until I get to highway cruising speed. The front does not nose dive under braking. The rear does not bounce when pushed down. The build plate does not show 'sport' suspension. No Nivomats.

So, how do I determine if the shocks are in need of replacement? The car has 181K miles, actual.

Can I look at the rear shock bushings and glean anything from them?
