KEYLESS REMOTE ENTRY SYSTEM 850 1997

Before you get one of two different remotes (only one will work) try this:

Get in the car, close the door, turn the key to position II 5 times and leave it in the on position. The dash LED will blink rapidly signifying a new key can be programmed. If no blinking, then the transceiver will not work with a remote.

Consider yourself lucky. I don't bother with a remote. It is too bulky. You need a key anyway to start the engine. The door lock will not corrode because a key is constantly being used. You don't have to worry about a low battery. After aging, the key needs to be closer and closer to the transceiver.
