Climate fan works when it wants to V70-XC70 1998

I apologize for repeated posts about the same issue. My daughter is driving our '98 V70 AWD. She's about 4 hours away, so I have limited the car.

The climate fan was not working when I tried it, even with the manual fan switch all the way over to the right. The climate lights are blinking. After I posted my recent request for help, she called to tell me that the fan had come on and worked during a recent five-minute trip to the store, but did not work again on the way home. So, I guess the fan works intermittently. I was thinking of swapping out the dash control unit at a pick-and-pull, but I don't want to do that if it's simply barking up the wrong tree. Thoughts about the problem?
