Extended Factory Warranties: Volvo vs. 3rd Party Companies? XC90

Hello All,

I have a 2016 XC90 T8 Inscription Hybrid Plug-In. The car has just over 47,000 miles and the factory warranty will expire soon. A few days ago, I was reminded of the value of the factory warranty when the electric differential on the rear passenger axle failed. The part retailed for between $4K to $5K and that did not include the labor to install it. Volvo sells a comprehensive extended warranty called the Volvo VIP Platinum plan. It extends the factory warranty 5 years/60,000 miles. The cost of the warranty is determined by the deductible your choose: $0, $100, $250, $500. The higher the deductible the lower the one time premium you pay. I am considering the $250 deductible which will result in a premium in excess of $4000. Many of the Volvo dealers I have spoken with are also offering private 3rd Party Warranty Plans that are longer in coverage in terms of years and mileage for nearly half the cost. My question to the BrickBoard Community: Has anyone purchased any of these private 3rd Party Warranty contracts and if you have what was your experience like?

At this juncture, I am leaning to purchasing the more expensive Volvo warranty, but I am keeping an open mind. Thanks to all who respond.

Hugh
