The middle number is the aspect ratio. If you want to increase the ratio from 40 to 50, then the width of the tread needs to be decreased. To keep the same wheel size, you would need to mount 195/50-18. Obviously, if you step down in wheel size, you can gain wider tread along with a higher ratio.
