Hood release bypass/work-around? V70-XC70 2007

I posted a couple days ago about this, and now I am trying a different question/solution. The hood release cable (and handle) have broken off inside the car. It looks like more of a job than I can do myself to replace it, and the amount of time it will take for a mechanic makes the job too expensive. Is there any way to rout or cut the cable that goes to the interior so I can release from outside the car? For example, could I perhaps run the cable through the front grille, or below the front bumper, and access it that way? Alternatively, could I adjust so that I don't need the initial release at all, and simply release the hood from the front hood latch (the secondary release)?
Thanks!
