AWD system not working. Just remembered: I heard a loud 'Clunk' when accelerating V70-XC70 2005

I posted yesterday about my AWD system and whether it could be related the the ABS system. I just remembered that I was accelerating hard (from a stop) and I heard and sort of felt a loud clunk. I did not put two and two together--I thought maybe I had hit an unseen pothole--but I think that was when I noticed, almost immediately, the AWD system not working (the front wheels spun during that acceleration). Did I break the AWD system with a hard acceleration? Might I have done something simple to fix (like sheared a bolt or something), or is this catastrophic? Should we accelerate gingerly with this system? Car is 2005 w/185K miles.
