S80 2.5T - starts then dies; MAF?

2005 S80 2.5T, ~160k miles.

The car starts, then quickly dies. Repeatedly. No CEL.

I unplugged the MAF, it started and ran smoothly for several minutes. Turned off the car, plugged the MAF back in. Now it starts and runs smoothly. Two questions:

1) Bad MAF?
2) Why does it run nicely with it unplugged? That surprised me.
