2007 XC 70 erratic shifting V70-XC70 2007

My 2007 wagon is having a problem since I let my brother use it for a couple of years. If I slow down and take my foot off the gas and then give it gas to get going again, the car seems like it was in Neutral and it hesitates a few seconds while getting back into gear, and sometimes seems to have a burst of energy. At first I thought it was a transmission problem, but could it be something else? Someone mentioned "linkage" to me. Is that an easy thing to diagnose and fix? I intend to sell the car within the year, and I would like it to run the way it should. Thanks!
