Shifter is locked in Park V70-XC70 2008

I have the XC70 model that has the shift lock release behind the center console. the shift lock has been engaging occassionally for several years. The tech says that it was a programming issue. Since I was able to use the lock release behind the console, I didnt take it to the Volvo dealer, 50 miles away. recently when it locked up, the release trick didnt work and I had to have it towed. when the dealer recieved it, it was no longer locked and they are not able to diagnose the issue. Anyone have any experience with this problem? A computer issue?
