S40 Oil Pan Hard Plastic? S40-V40 2003

My garage is too cramped to get under the car much, so I took a very attractive offer from a Midas garage to have the ail changed, I provided the OE filter.

It was a surprise to me to see the drain plus not threading into the pan itself, but into a housing of sorts.

What is this thing called? The mechanic was under the car and removed this rather large housing that they said was hard plastic and how could that be, what about very hot oil, would that not distort the thing I am referring to?

Can anyone enlighten me? Is it some kind of Band Aid for a stripped drain plus? This is really baffling. Thanks, DougW
