Washer Fluid Level 850 1996

My 96 850 turbo has a light which should come on when the windshield washer fluid is low. The sensor for this is in the winshield washer tank. Mine is no longer working. Is there a way to find the cause of the problem? How does this system work? Is there a way to test the operation of the sensor.

I don't want to buy a new sensor if the problem is somewhere else.
