850 Remotes (Model Year Compatibility) 850 1995

My mom recently bought a 1995 850 5spd NA wagon. It is equipped with alarm/keyless entry (per window sticker) but the seller never got remotes from the first owner.

I obtained a remote like the one for my car (1994 850t wagon, remote buttons side-by-side) from our favorite auction site, and my mom's car won't accept it when I try to program it in to her alarm. After this I tried the new remote on my car, it programmed in (to my car) fine. I then tried one of my car's remotes on her car and it too did not program in.

Question is, does the 1995 model year take the later type remote (buttons top-to-bottom instead of side-to-side)? I was under the impression those remotes are for 1996 and later(?). Was there a mid-year change on this?

Not that I mind having an extra remote for my car (29 bucks including shipping and it's brand new was a good deal I thought), but next time I try to get one for mom's car I want it to work...this was gonna be sorta a Christmas present for her new car ;-)

TIA for any replies! Happy New Year all!
