Drive Shaft Boot

I just took my car to the dealer for recall work (they did some, but not all that was listed on ALLDATA'S web page). While doing the work they discovered that my drive shaft boot is torn completely open! They quoted me $799 for the part plus $95 labor. I found the axle online for $160, which I imagine is refurbished. Has anyone had experience with a refurbished axle or replacing just the boot? The dealer said I need to replace the whole thing - axle and boot.
They found many other items as well, but this one is the most costly.
Thanks in advance!
