Mysterious Groaning on startup. Please help! 850 1996

I think that what you hear is the air pump. I'm on shaky ground here but I think it pumps air into the exhaust to help burn up the rich mixture that exists while the engine is cold.

Does it ever happen when the engine is warm? How long does it take your car to start up? If you have a cold air intake then it will probably take longer to warm up which may be why the air pump is running so long.

I have an '97 850R and I hear the same thing for a minute or so on really cold mornings, but my engine warms up in just a couple of minutes.

IF it starts to sound really loud then it may be time to replace it.
