AWD gear oil smell V70-XC70 2000

I've had a chance the use the AWD intensively while on vacation in Quebec city during the holidays and noticed a very bad smell in the cabin, reminding me of the same odor I had a year ago which was corrected by replacing the bevel gear seal. Now my dealer tells me that there is an overflow valve where gear oil can get out, and when it does, it goes directly on the hot exhaust, hence the pungent odor in the cabin with the ventilation running. Seriously, it was so stong at some point that we had to stop and get out of the car for a while.. Anyone with the same problem? Is there something wrong with the bevel gear? Car has 47,000 Kms (~30K miles).
