Won't start V70-XC70 1998

End of story (I hope):

Sat -- car would not start, clicking noise only when key turned, could not jump
Sun -- car started after cranking slowly, put in new battery, at which time was told that the alternator was bad
Mon -- took car to Volvo dealer and had the pleasure of paying $679 for new alternator
